Creation and Flood - Written in Stone On at least one walkway in Grand Canyon National Park, you'll find a sign like the one below with a cut-away view of the canyon showing the many rocks layers that comprise the canyon and referring to billions of years secularists believe it took to form the canyon. You've likely heard the uniformitarian secular view: that the Colorado river, flowing (where letter A is in the picture below) over billions of years carved out the canyon. The uniformatarian view holds that the slow processes we see today, working uniformly over long periods of time (millions or billions of years), were the same processes occurring millions and billions of years ago, and caused the features in the canyon that we see today. There are many reasons why that theory is clearly wrong. One is obvious as you walk the path through the park and see the various gorges. Many have been cut in places where the river doesn't run. If the Colorado river cut the gorges of the Grand Canyon, how can you have gorges where the river doesn't run? The geologists have an equally big and equally unexplainable problem. It's called the "Great Unconformity."[1] Secular geologists believe the various layers of the canyon represent millions of years as sediments are slowly deposited over time. The obvious problem with that theory is you see no erosion between layers as you'd expect. There are no disturbances due to tree roots, or burrowing animals; no wind blown surfaces or any of the other evidences of erosion you'd expect to see if the layers really represent deposits settling over millions of years and exposed to the elements. But that's just another obvious problem to note in passing. The main problem is that according to secular geological reasoning, there's about 1.3 billion years missing at the layer where the arrow is pointing at below.
The Great Unconformity So there's 1.3 billions years missing as far as the secular geologists can tell. The problem is caused because, in the picture above, you have "younger" (as ChatGPT called them) sedimentary fossil bearing layers next to much older metamorphic and igneous rock layers. In fact, sedimentary layer D is the Cambrian layer, where you have an "explosion" of life (as secularists believe) or at least an explosion of fossils of just about every type of phyla (body type). Below the arrow, there are no fossils. According to Darwin's theory, evolution had to be slow and steady with no "saltations" or jumps. You can't, for example, go from a single celled animal to a complex creature like a trilobite instantaneously or in one layer. That should take millions or billions of years. But at the Great Unconformity you have complex creatures of every kind in the Cambrian layer (and thus they call it the "Cambrian Explosion") yet below it there is no trail of steadily increasing complex fossils as they expect to find - a trail that should take 1.3 billion years to traverse and leave signs of ever increasing complexity in creatures. Thus the "unconformity" and the problem for secularists. However hidden in plain sight in the creation and global flood accounts in the Bible is the explanation for what we see in the layers of the canyon.[2] Secularists call the metamorphic rock at B "basement" rocks. I would call them foundational rocks or creation rocks. They are the rocks originally created after God started the creation of earth with water. (Gen 1.2, 2 Pe 3.5) At the beginning of the creation, we see the Spirit of God hovering over the waters of creation (Gen 1.2). After creating sky by separating water above and below the sky on day 2 (Gen 1.7-8). Next on day 3, God gathers the water together, creates ground, and makes it rise out of the water. We see the evidence of that rising of the ground in the canyon cutaway above. First there was the foundational or basement rock (B), which God caused to rise out of the midst of the water (Gen 1.9-10). As the ground was being lifted, there were layers of sediment at C (which secularists call "The Precambrian Grand Canyon Super Group") flowing down the foundational rock B as it rose from the waters creating the tilted sedimentary layers which we see in section C. This was on day three, and God did not create living creatures until day five, so we would not expect to see fossils of living creatures in either the foundational rocks (B), nor the layers that formed when God lifted the ground out of the waters (C) because no creatures had yet been created. After God created creatures, there were still no creatures buried, because the layers don't represent millions of years of deposition; they represent rapid burial as wave after wave of tsunamis washed earthen sediment, debris and creatures upon the land after the "fountains of the Great Deep" broke open and "windows of heaven" rained down the waters that initiated the global flood (Gen 7.11) and the two water sources began flooding the land. Incidentally, this is why you can find sharks buried with T-Rex fossils - because they were washed ashore and buried together by sediment carrying tsunamis. The waters rose until all land was completely covered (Gen 7.19-20). It was successive waves of tsunamis during the flood of Noah that buried the creatures at that time and created the layer upon layer - now represented as the "geological column", that secular geologists believe took millions of years, but were actually laid down during the flood which took about a year. So the layer at letter D - the Cambrian layer - represents the first layer of earth, debris and buried creatures that later became fossils, were the first to be buried at the start of the flood. Unsurprisingly the Cambrian fossils are comprised mostly of sea creatures because the burials caused by the flood started in the sea - with opening of the fountains of the Great under the waters of the sea.
How Did The Canyon Form? You're probably wondering, if the Colorado river didn't carve out the canyon, what did? Even secular geologists are beginning to realize the canyon was not carved by a river over billions of years, because, in addition to the problem noted above, if it were the river, we would expect to see more Grand Canyons around the world - but we don't. The Grand Canyon is unique - so it must have been a unique event. This is also why it is unlikely to have formed from the receding flood waters. If that were the case, again we'd expect to see other canyons like this one since the water was receding all over the earth. However, Genesis chapter 8 reveals the waters were receding for months, and the canyon appears to have been formed from a much more rapid, catastrophic event. As geologist look at the land features around the canyon, it is apparent there were once two large basins carved out during or after the flood. Water from rain, and melting snow draining down mountains after the (single) ice age filled the basins north east and east of the canyon. As you can see from the illustration below, the basins for Grand Lake and Hopi Lake (named for the indian tribe) were huge compared to the canyon, which is represented in black to the west of the lakes in dark blue (and would have been much smaller prior to its formation event). Creationist geologists believe the run off water into the two basins continued to fill the lakes until the basins were full. At some point the increasing water levels caused a breach that joined the two lakes, and then, the water from both lakes breached the entry point at the east end of the canyon. Once the canyon entry point was breeched by the waters from the lakes, the massive amount of fast moving, flooding waters rapidly carved out the canyon as the lakes were emptied of their water. This also washed away a large part of the top layer of canyon explaining another feature of the canyon secularists have a problem explaining - the great denudation - so called because 2,000 square miles around the canyon is missing 1,000 feet of "Mesozoic" rock. Another feature that the slow uniformitarian approach cannot explain.
Accordingly, in the very existence of the Grand Canyon,
is a
record of the creation and the flood - written in stone. Now that you
know, the next time someone tells you the Genesis account of
creation is poetic or a logical frame work that doesn't actually
represent what happened,
you can tell them, no it's literal, and you can tell because it's written in the stone of
the Grand Canyon. Then send a link to this article. Duane Caldwell | June
